September 2023

Farewell to Laura! Her last day in the lab was September 1st.

Laura has left the Carchman lab after 4 and 1/2 years, moving with her husband to Chicago this Fall. She has been a big part of lab over the years, from hiring and training Undergrad students and staff members to writing and publishing peer-reviewed journal articles. We wish her the best in her new role in IL! If you have mouse experience (handling, breeding, genotyping), lab management experience, and excellent organizational skills… contact us.

Thanks to Garrett for joining us this summer for 6 weeks of research in the lab!

Garrett started in the lab as an Undergraduate Student Researcher (2018-2020), and returned this summer as a SMPH Honorary Associate. He spent a lot of time staining and at the microscope. Best of luck to Garrett in his second year of medical school at DMU.

Dr. Hillary Johnson finished up her Residency Research years in the Carchman Lab on June 22nd!

Dr. Johnson started in the lab in July 2021 and jumped right in to working with murine models. She has presented at countless local and national conferences, and picked up plenty of lab technical skills collaborating with Dr. Murtaza’s lab here on campus. Best of luck to Hillary as she transitions back to surgical residency.

Dr. Evie Carchman and Dr. Hillary Johnson attended the 2023 American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons Annual Scientific Meeting in Seattle, WA June 3-6, 2023

Dr. Johnson’s Presentation Title: “SIZE OF ANAL DYSPLASIA TISSUE SAMPLE DOES NOT IMPACT PERFORMANCE OF dPCR ASSAY.” *Johnson H, Dennison K, Nkadori E, McGregor SM, Murtaza M, Carchman EH.

Congrats to Marissa! She graduated this year with her Bachelor’s on May 13, 2023 and headed to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute at Harvard.

Marissa started in the lab as a Freshman Undergraduate Student Researcher, and now graduated with degrees in Pharmacology/Toxicology and Biology and a minor in Global Health. She has been an awesome contributor to the Carchman lab from earning 1st place oral presentation awards to manuscript writing. She will be missed, and we wish her the best of luck in her future endeavors!
